In this second instalment of the Archie Greene series, the similarities with Harry Potter are somewhat more pronounced.

Added to this are ideas like a magical mental hospital and possessed books, which are both things that have been seen before.

The biggest problem I have with this book is als In this second instalment of the Archie Greene series, the similarities with Harry Potter are somewhat more pronounced.

The biggest problem I have with this book is also a criticism that I raised with the first one. In these short books, Everest tries to flesh out his world.

At least one new concept pops up in every chapter and needs to be explained in full. A lot of these such as the fortune smeller are largely irrelevant to proceedings and make the novel a bit overwhelming.

While plot points rise to the surface every now and then, they quickly sink again beneath the sea of magical ideas many of them puns on mundane things, like the door ray and huge supporting cast.

In terms of plot, this book does at least advance the overarching story, with Archie learning a little more about the threat to the museum and fate of his parents.

The plot is largely self-contained in this volume, though does really only conclude itself over the last fifteen pages or so of the book, making the climax feel rushed and a leaving little time for any wrap-up after the event.

In terms of characterisation, the book was also a bit weak. There is a massive supporting cast in this book, many of whom have very similar names as there are only a few magical families in the world.

Archie himself is also a bit of a blank slate. Archie has known about magic for only a few months, yet already he is the most powerful wizard.

This is really frustrating the read, as his absurd amount of power makes him seem very shallow. Everything comes so easy to him that it leeches away any tension.

I was really underwhelmed by this book. This book thrilled me. The characters are marvelously realistic, as well as the limitations of magic, making the book well-fleshed out with a heart to its story.

It was all wonderfully done, with just enough description to leave you informed yet not spoil it, actually enticing you to read This book thrilled me.

It was all wonderfully done, with just enough description to leave you informed yet not spoil it, actually enticing you to read the first book.

The plot is fascinating, leaving you on the edge of your seat as you navigate through the twists and turns of the action and subterfuge.

Everest does a terrific job at bringing the details in slowly, leaving you guessing but never quite certain. The writing is perfect for middle-graders, with the right amount of thrills and humor, and enticing characters and a hooking plot.

It was a wonderful piece of work, and I cannot wait to read what comes next! Please note I received a free review copy of this book.

This first novel in the Archie Greene series is a great read for any kids who like to read about magical adventures with some cool historical references thrown in.

It takes you from the Library of Alexandria - to s England back to modern day Oxford. The ending of this book does get fairly intense and a bit scary - it may be a good idea to read the ending to gage whether you think they are ready for it.

The rest of the book is easy to follow and very fun - perfect for ages Dec 02, Lyrical Librarian rated it it was ok Shelves: The premise was great: However, it is a disappointing read.

There is a shameful lack of continuity, the characters are mostly without depth, you do not become invested in the story, and thus drama and suspense fail to build.

Review posted at www. Archie who does not care for most things that are old is intrigued by the book, and soon finds himself in an entirely different world and with a very big destiny to fulfill.

That is where this book first shines: Archie soon moves in with his eccentric aunt, uncle, and two cousins, who introduce him to this strange new world.

His extended family make up my favorite characters in this story: As Archie settles into his new role of apprentice, things start to happen at the Museum of Magical Miscellany, the place where all of the magical texts are kept safely tucked away.

As secrets unfold, Archie comes to find that he plays a much large role in the future of the museum-- and of magic. Though I did enjoy the story and managed to finish it in one sitting , I found myself a bit unimpressed by the level of writing.

This book is intended for an year-old audience and readers of that age can handle very complex plots and pick up a lot more subtle hints than you might guess.

This disappointed me because many of these obvious observations came from Archie himself, and I felt that his character profile was considerably weakened because of it.

In addition to that, there was a lot of straight info-dumping at the beginning of the book. His parents were Jewish-Ukrainian immigrants from Chernigov , where his father had participated in the uprising against the Russian czar in When that revolution failed, they escaped to Canada.

Describing himself as an " anarcho-syndicalist with strong libertarian leanings," or a " left-libertarian ," [4] Green combined a sensitivity for working people, an abiding concern for democratic processes, and a pragmatic willingness to lobby for reforms.

He spent his career not only collecting material from laborers, but encouraging workers themselves to document and preserve their own lore.

In Green purchased the album Work Songs of the U. His love of music and especially the song "Old Man" sparked his interest in folkloristics, but it was to be nearly two decades before he returned to formal academia.

Green enrolled in graduate school in , earning an M. He combined his support for labor and love of country music in the research that became his first book, Only a Miner.

Green joined the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in , where he held a joint appointment in the Institute of Labor and Industrial Relations and the English Department until In he joined the faculty of the University of Texas at Austin.

In retirement from teaching, Green continued to write and publish the results of years of research. Green inherited the project from John Neuhaus, a machinist and Wobbly who devoted years to collecting a nearly complete set of the IWW songbooks and determining what music the songs had been set to.

After discovering that his destiny may require an important choice, Archie and his friends must work together to unearth the secrets of the past, before history repeats itself.

This is a richly imagined tale set in a thoroughly detailed magical world. Within the first few chapters Archie receives a completely unexpected and quite possibly dangerous new apprenticeship mark, as well as being told in a highly public and quite possibly ruinous fashion that his destiny is cloudy at best.

The author takes great pains to point out the salient bits of information that readers new to the series might need to know, and while this is helpful, it does slow the story significantly in the early stages.

If you can get past the informational asides however, there is a detailed world awaiting you with plenty of spirit and flair, as well as a historical mystery that appears to be replaying itself in the present.

I would be interested to go back to book one and start this series where it is supposed to begin because the writing is quite absorbing, the characters varied and the world thoroughly magical.

But a very cool book about magic existing in our world!!
